Selecting Your Sleep Medicine Doctor
Credentialing of sleep specialists now occurs through American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). In 1987 the World Federation of Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine Societies was founded, incorporating researchers, as well as, medical practitioners. Sleep specialists may also be members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) or the Sleep Research Society. There is also, a Sleep Medicine Certification that some Psychiatrists and Neurologists may obtain after meeting criteria set by the American Board of Psychiatry, Neurology and its sub-disciplines at the end of 12 months of formalizing sleep medicine training. Sleep disorder laboratories and centers or clinics are accredited by the AASM if they meet certain thresholds of medical best practices and staffing.
Find A Sleep Medicine Practitioner
Your primary care or internal medicine physician may be the first place to start. You may need to obtain a referral for a sleep test to evaluate the degree and rule out of certain conditions to best direct your next step in treatment. Pulmonary specialists, kidney specialists, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, bariatric surgeons, dentists and/or other professionals may play a role in your ultimate care plan.
